These days we hear and read a lot about digitalization, data scientists and data experts, what it needs to become one, the importance of big data and the skills to analyze it to serve our customers better – and yes, also to be successful as a company ;-) We met Željko and Dora, two Croatian colleagues who took the opportunity to move to Austria and spread their data skills at the A1 headquarters in Vienna #MakeItHappen. In an interview, they share their personal insights on learning, their fascination for data and working for an international company.

To become a data driven company, which empowers the digital life of our customer, many skills have to be learnt, processes must be improved and structures have to be adopted to satisfy customers’ needs. While for most of us the fascination of a starry sky is likely to understand, we don’t see the beauty of a million data sets at first glance. So, talking to our data experts Željko Smolar, A1 Group Marketing and Dora Majnaric, A1 Group, Data, Analytics & AI in Digital Transformation Center of Excellence, brightens up our understanding :-) #enjoy!

That’s the reason why I love data science:
Dora Majnaric: It’s all about informed decisions and helping us be even better.

Best about my job is…

working in an international environment, with great team spirit and colleagues coming from many different countries, from Uzbekistan and France to Greece, Austria and many more

My personal motivation to work abroad is…
new city & new challenges

Similarities and differences between my culture and Austrian culture are…
I would say the two cultures are quite similar. I like that the question “where are you from” is a must, and how they have a really wide range of different bottled water ;-) And how everyone is a skier.

What is great about working for an international company like A1 is…
in the Group, we work for all the operating companies. It is exciting to see frameworks and prototypes being scaled out to our local markets.

To share knowledge gives me a good feeling because…
I am a firm believer that knowledge sharing is the only way we can grow, both personally and professionally.

Constant learning means to me…
not only staying educated about new trends and technologies on data, but also listening and learning from feedback.

Best about working and living in Vienna is…
living in a big, metropolitan city. I don’t like the term melting pot so much, but fact is- anyone can find something for itself here.

An advice I would like to share with others (about getting curious on data science and/or take the opportunity to work abroad):
You should just go for it! :-)

Željko Smolar
A1 Group Marketing

That’s the reason why I love data science:
Željko Smolar: Data is the fundamental building block of our business transformation
(core and all supporting functions) into a digital-first.
The transformation process is providing us with abundance of data that we can use to be better and data analysis / science is a set of skills which is essential for this.

Best about my job is…
The opportunity to connect great people across countries to work together and having a front row seat when they achieve fantastic results.

My personal motivation to work abroad is…
The experience of living in a different country opens new perspectives, the possibility to meet interesting people and makes you think about the things that are most important in your life

Similarities and differences between my culture and Austrian culture are…
Considering long history between our countries, there are much more similarities than differences in our cultures. Because of that, cultural elements are overruled by individual personalities and specific company culture within our companies.

What is great about working for an international company like A1 is…
The greatest asset that A1 has is the people working in it, different cultures, perspectives and individual characters merged and growing together.

To share knowledge gives me a good feeling because…
Sharing and exchanging knowledge supports development of growth mindset that is one of the key skills needed in the present day.

»Constant learning is way of life, if you stop learning – what is left?«

Best about working and living in Vienna is….
being exposed and learning about so many different cultures, meeting different people and have a positive outlook to what future brings. Actually, Vienna as a city is a fantastic mix of rational and emotional components, deeply intertwined.

An advice I would like to share with others (about getting curious on data science and/or take the opportunity to work abroad)…
Moving for the first time in a new country and learning about data science both sounds as something difficult / impossible when you think about it for the first time. But if you keep thinking about any of them – then my advice is – just try it!
